About the author...
Becky Mayberry
M. Ed.
Becky teaches English as a Second Language to adult students and is the extremely proud parent of Alex and Alison.
Originally from a small town (Atkins) nestled in the mountains of Virginia, she has lived in Charleston, SC since 1994. She is a graduate of Appalachian State University (GO MOUNTAINEERS!) and a lifelong fan of Rick Springfield!
Having met at a baseball game ten years prior to the accident and becoming instantaneous friends, Mike and Becky had kept in touch over the years and shared stories about their kids and mutual friends.
Becky said, “I was feeling the angst of empty nesting in 2021 and was looking for something to fill the void. On a walk in my neighborhood, I looked to the heavens and asked God to give me something, anything, to fill my time.”
That evening, after her daughter’s swim meet, she went out the door on the left instead of the door on the right and ran into friends who randomly snapped a picture that was later posted on social media. Mike saw the picture and sent Becky a message to catch up. It was the first time they had spoken since his accident. Mike asked Becky how she was. She said, “Never mind about me, how are you?” They chatted for hours about the incident and his subsequent recovery. She said, “You need to write this stuff down, your story is incredible.” His snarky response was, “You are the smart one, you write it.”
At that moment, she knew that was a sign from God. Recounting the project with a grin, she said, “After years of research, countless interviews, and dealing with Mike and ‘his hard head,’ it has been an honor and blessing to be a part of this project. Mike is an inspiration, and I am proud to call him my friend.”
